System Alignment involves computerized sound measurement tools such as SMAART and TEF. Sound systems can play havoc on our senses when not properly aligned. Proper alignment means all drivers or all subsystems should arrive to the listener at relatively the same time. We use computerized measurement tools to analyze and make decisions for the adjustment of these arrival times. How much time? Pat Brown of SynAudCon says “It depends” and it does, it depends on the sound system, the drivers, the processing gear, the room, the acoustics, and many more factors. Even as little as 1 ms of time offset can cause 24-30dB of cancellation at 500Hz.
We use also use measurement systems for adjustment of the equalization process. Since our ears are always adjusting, due to weather conditions, health, ever changing environments of noise, age and other factors. Computerized measurement systems help take the guess work out of the equation, of course our ears are always the final analyzer, these measurement systems are tools.
