What is System Tuning? I'm glad you asked!!! This is one of my favorite subjects of life, since I teach it daily at Full Sail Education in Orlando. System Alignment involves computerized sound measurement tools such as SIM, SMAART, & TEF and there are many others. Sound systems can play havoc on your senses when not properly aligned. Proper alignment means all drivers (frequencies) or all subsystems should be arriving to the listener at relatively the same time. So we use measurement tools to be able to read and make decisions for the adjustment of these arrival times. How much time you ask? Well as Pat Brown of SynAudCon says "It Depends" and it does, it depends on the sound system, the drivers, the processing gear, the room, the acoustics, and many more factors. Even as little as 1 ms of time offset can cause 24-30 dB of cancellation at 500 Hz. We use measurement systems for adjustment of the equalization process. Since our ears are always adjusting, due to weather conditions, health, ever changing environments of noise, age and other factors. Computerized measurement systems help take the guess work out of the equation, of course, our ears are always the final analyzer, these measurement systems are tools, just like hammers. If you get good with one you can build a house in no time. If you are not good with one, call a contractor. These are just a few of the measurements we perform, some other tests performed are: RT60 - calculation of reverberation, localizing and determining useful and destructive reflected energy, noise analysis, etc MSA Productions currently uses SMAART LIVE 5 and Goldline TEF25 with Earthworks M30 Microphones for Sound System Alignment.
